P recommended this; it didn’t do a lot for me. A bit of 15th century Italian history, (no nation state, just cities always at war with each other), bankers trying to find ways of making money out of money without risking damnation for usury, and the machinations of the Medici family. But once these interesting basics were set up it was just an interminable historical chronology of endless infighting both within families and Italian society. Far too many names and characters dropping in and out of the story for me!
