809. JP Delaney - Believe Me

The last of the 3 Xmas books from Dan’s Waterstones token. Couldn’t make my mind up about this – the writing was poor, but the plotting (although a bit far fetched towards the end) brilliant. It certainly stimulated an interest in Baudelaire, about whom I knew (and know) very little. I thought when reading it that it was being written as a film script rather than a book and this may well have been the intention. The plot involves an english actress living illegally in New York who earns her rent money as a honeytrap for a private investigator, whose clients are women suspicious of their husbands’ fidelity. But she encounters a client with a murdered wife who appears at first to show no interest. It then becomes a very complex ‘Did he, or didn’t he’ (and subsequently ‘did she or didn’t she’) do it? Cleverly plotted and fast paced, but I still can’t make my mind up!
