810. Jane Gardam - Bilgewater

Paddy loves this but I found it pretty hard work. It is well written (the prose is streets above 809 above), but I just couldn’t warm to it. Perhaps because I have never been an adolescent girl, it was suggested.

Bilgewater (a girls’ nickname) is a seriously alienated teenager, who goes through her teens continuing to be seriously alienated from everyone else. Possibly she gets into Cambridge near the end, in which case good for her, but I had lost interest by then.
