Thought I would try another straight away; this is the first Tom Thorne book.
I thought it was structurally a bit repetitive (ie of no.98 above) which is wrong as this predates no.98, but you see my point.
A habit Billingham has is of jumping from one interior monologue to another with no indication, which makes for a lot of skipping back once the penny has dropped. I prefer Jane Austen who wouldn't have done unflagged narrative changes like this.
Need to read a bit more to get a proper feel for Thorne - he is a hard man, overfull of self belief who gets things wrong like most detectives.
