Read this again as it is book group tonight. I can’t say that it was much better on a second reading.
The heroine was a slightly bohemian Tokyo figure who had sung in nightclubs both in New York and Tokyo, so the rigid conventionality of her marriage was clearly more of a challenge than I had given her credit for. But nonetheless, the plot went nowhere; she falls in love with a rather bohemian Tokyo restauranteur, but cannot leave her boring husband or kids for him. Written I assume in English; could really have done with a glossary of the many Japanese terms used in it ‘yakuta’,’omatsyri’, kakigori’ all on page. 195, mostly food I think but annoying not to know.
