I love the Alexandria Quartet, but this is a fairly lightweight thriller set in communist-occupied Serbia in the 1950’s.
The central figure is a very anodyne SOE agent called Methuen, a typically upper-middle class Brit whose main interest is fly fishing.
Sent on a fairly improbable mission to Serbia, he spends most of his time wandering in the mountains until, mission apparently accomplished, he returns to London.
Described apparently by the Daily Telegraph as ‘a desperately [sic] exciting book’, I struggle to agree. Reminded me, if anything, of ‘The 39 Steps’, lots of chasing around the countryside.
