A serious and classic novel in response to the above thoughts; I am not sure if I have read this before, although we bought it in 1978!
An interesting variant on the classic romantic novel - young heiress wooed by and falls in love with (apparent) gold-digger, but refuses him due to her father’s opposition.
The central figure is possibly her widowed aunt who lives with them and encourages the romance, despite her brother’s views. Father takes daughter to Europe to get her away from the suitor, but her views don’t change. Meanwhile in New York, the sister continues to encourage the suitor and claims, on their return, to have been practically living with him in their absence. But he gets bored with waiting, and gives up to pursue an unsuccessful business and life career. Daughter never marries and they meet near the end, but she rejects him.
Not a great book – James didn’t include it in a collection he put together and I am not entirely surprised.
