Never heard of the author, although he has written a lot and this was very good. About the fictional mid 1960’s rock band, covering their formation in 1964 in London and ending in San Francisco about four years later. On the way, they met The Beatles, Brian Jones, Bowie, and then in New York Janis Joplin and Leonard Cohen, ending in San Francisco tripping with Jerry Garcia and Pigpen.
There are four band members, Dean, the bassist probably the central figure, Griff, the very working class drummer, Elf the female singer and keyboard player, much more middle class than the others and Jasper De Zoet, the brilliant but psychologically very disturbed guitarist.
It has its longeurs, particularly Jasper’s bouts of psychosis, but for a man of my generation very appealing. Something on the TV last night about Fleetwood Mac, possibly the band are modelled around them in the same period? Unusual for a 60’s rock band, apart from Jefferson Airplane, to have a female singer, although I don’t think Grace Slick, unlike Elf, came out as gay.
