This is a wonderful book, that has somehow sat unread on the bookshelf for years, maybe since my dad died?
Diarmuid Devine is a middle aged teacher in a boys Catholic school in Belfast. Overhearing some derogatory comments about him being a bit of an old maid, he decides to unleash his sexuality and find a woman.
He encounters the niece of a colleague at a party, a much younger girl, and a Protestant with a slightly shady past from Dublin. Their totally unsuccessful relationship and particularly the sexless night they spend together is beautifully described, as are some of the machinations and jealousies between the school staff.
Brilliant, I must read more.
