919. Håkan Nesser - The Lonely Ones

Best novel I have read for a while. Beautifully constructed and written.

The plot covers a 35 year period from the mid 1970’s to the early 21st century. There are really only ten main characters; seven a bunch of students in mid 1970’s and three including the wife of one policemen who investigated two probable murders, one in 1975 and the other 35 years later, both involving members the student group. So time shifts between past and present.

The deaths both involve a fall or push from the same bit of escarpment in a wood in Sweden. Uncertain until near the end whether there have definitely been any murders, or possibly 2 improbably related accidents.

All the characters are well developed and fleshed out in the plot. The ending should probably remain a mystery, but a brilliant, clever and very readable book.
