Sub-titled ‘A history of feminism in 11 fights’ this is very good, a mix of intelligent journalism and at times scholarly text.
The underlying thesis is very clear and well-argued – feminism is a continuous (and probably unending) struggle for women, which must be carried on. There are victories, but only small ones, which in turn present further challenges. So divorce, the Vote, sexual equality, education, etc all had to be and need to be continually fought for.
She picks 11 women who were emblematic of the struggles for these 11 issues, and were each in their way feminists, although none are perfect, and not all admired in all respects, by the author.
Always strenuous but always challenging reading and good for this very reason.
