905. Susanna Clarke - Piranesi

One of P’s. Very strange book – if it reminded me of anything it was Philip Pullman with the parallel world's theme. Or it could be a book about madness.

Starts (and most of it takes place) in a huge building full of chambers and only two living people, Piranesi and The Other occupying it. Piranesi is convinced that there are perhaps 15 people there, of whom 13 are dead.. the two have an uneasy relationship and only interact sporadically.

Gradually it appears that there are others, most of whom The Other warns Piranesi against, but bits of history begin to transpire and it is in fact The Other who is the malevolent one, as the real world, where they all have pasts begins to break through.

Challenging and obscure; did I enjoy it? Enjoyed the challenge and is probably worth re-reading, but not in a great hurry.
