903. William McIlvanney & Ian Rankin - The Dark Remains

The first Laidlaw novel, completed by Rankin following McIvanney’s death in 2015. I found it very hard work and with few characters of any interest.

The basic plot point was that the police (and sadly the reader) were chasing various red herrings as a result of self-interest/ineptitude, following the murder of a corrupt Glasgow lawyer. The assumption was that one of three rival criminal gangs was responsible, whereas, in fact, it was the wife or possibly the whole family of the victim. The inept senior policeman was involved with or just fancied the woman, leading everyone up the garden path.

Quite tedious!
