888. Patricia Highsmith - Strangers On A Train

I expected the plot and characters to be more symmetrical, but the two characters who meet on the train and plot parallel murders – Guy, a young architect, unhappily married is pretty normal; Bruno/Charles, the guy he meets is a total psychopath (a proto Ripley?) and drives the events forward.

I think Bruno/Charles murders Guy’s wife without the latter's knowledge and then blackmails Guy into carrying out his side of the ‘bargain’. Which Guy does, reluctantly.

After the murders, the plot meanders a little – Bruno dies, falling off Guy’s boat, and a guilt ridden Guy finally confesses to his ex wife’s husband while the police are bugging his room.

Challenging, difficult, but very interesting as a concept. Would like to see the Hitchcock film.
