880. Abi Dare - The Girl With The Louding Voice

This is very good.

Set in Nigeria, Adunni, a village girl is sold at 14 into marriage, as the third wife of a wealthy villager, to pay the family bills. Escaping from this, she ends up in Lagos, as the slave/servant of a vulgar and wealthy woman and is abused in numerous ways. But she retains a questioning optimism, and her ‘louding voice’ won’t shut up whatever is happening. So her voice is her bravery.

Written in quasi-dialogue which reflects her wish to learn proper English and become articulate and ultimately a teacher, as her deceased mother wished. She is befriended by another wealthy but far more westernised Nigerian woman, who helps her to achieve this.

Very good.
