88. Gillian Flynn - Gone Girl

A very modern thriller, about a couple whose marriage has disintegrated, and he (Nick) may have killed her (Amy) and disposed of the body. In fact, she has very cleverly framed him and disappeared.

He isn't exactly blameless and as the dirt about his life spills out, it looks as if he is destined for the electric chair. But she then reappears; it turns out that she is a manipulative fantasist, who has taken bitter but well concealed revenge on every man she has had any sort of relationship with.

The book ends with him living with her in terror of any further misdemeanours for which she will frame him.

A brilliant plot, although I found the end a little disappointing; it kind of fizzled out and could have done with a bolder and cleaner bit of plotting to carry it through.
