866. Mick Herron - London Rules

I think this is the title. It is the one that begins with a massacre, cunningly written so that I assumed set in Africa until the last sentence when it becomes Derbyshire.

The first proper chapter is one of his wonderful evocations of Slough House, in which the dawn light slowly explores the building. It is also the one in which Rodi Ho is also nearly murdered by the terrorists, to whom his girlfriend has leaked information.

There are lots of very good interplays involving the Slough House characters (as ever), but I thought the central plot lacked substance in comparison with some of the other books, The denouement involved Jackson Lamb dishing a bit of dirt to Diane Taverner on one of her many rivals.

Good, but maybe not one of his best.
