I have read this before, I think many years ago and it is very good.
Full of quite graphic sex, but a lot better than Shades of Grey. The title is a pun on another word, which has an extra letter.
The heroin, a slightly poor sighted teacher of literature and philology in New York, goes for a drink with one of her students, and goes to the basement for a pee. A bit lost, she pushes open a door and a man is having his dick sucked off by a young red-head. The girl doesn’t see her but the man does.
She is subsequently visited by 2 policemen investigating the murder of a young redhead. She has a passionate affair with one of them, the Beckett-ian named Molloy, believing he was the man in the basement, and wondering about the fate of the redhead.
One of her friends is murdered and, convinced that Molloy is the killer, she runs off into the arms of his colleague. But she has misidentified the killer and the book ends with her narrating the moments leading, one assumes, to her own fairly gruesome death. Very good.
