Contemporary with 'Thérèse Raquin', this is not that interesting.
Set in French 19th century bourgeois society, a story of a rather dull man (William) whose partner and subsequent wife has a former lover, who haunts her and them, not deliberately. Neither can really decide whether to stay together in the circumstances, but do so despite fierce opposition from their housekeeper, an elderly and fiercely Puritanical protestant.
Their daughter eventually dies of cholera (I think) and as a result Madeleine commits suicide out of a mixture and guilt and maybe just confusion.
Quite hard work and not that rewarding.
