838. Mara Timon - City Of Spies

I enjoyed this, despite being irritated at times.

Quite a big canvass for a debut novel. Set mainly in Lisbon in the middle of the 2nd world war; the heroine is a rather posh English gal who has been recruited by SOE and the story begins in France where she hooks up with the resistance.

She combines, rather improbably, capability as a killing machine with beauty and an aristocratic background, a bit ‘Killing Eve’ when required. Cover eventually blown she flees to Lisbon, the city of spies.

This is well and interestingly portrayed: Portugal was neutral in the war and this + access to its port and the Atlantic attracted a huge number of wealthy and less reputable Europeans and diplomats from all over the continent.

Despite her continuing SOE role, she falls in love with a German, who turns out to be anti-Nazi and is plotting against Hitler.

Weird combination of elements of chic-lit with a good old fashioned spy thriller/adventure and would probably make a good film.
