834. Emile Zola - The Dead Woman's Wish

I think 833 is the first book; this is the 2nd.

Much more plot and characterisation, a dying woman entrusts her adopted son to care for her much younger biological daughter who is completely unaware of this.

The daughter grows up, marries disastrously and Daniel hangs around on the fringes unable to intervene. The husband dies and Daniel and his friend George get to know the woman. But identity confusions arise and it is George who falls in love with the woman and Daniel withdraws, despite having written her passionate but anonymous letters, which she assumes are from George, and dies.

Quite good.
