833. Emile Zola - Claude's Confession


I read this as a not very good Bildungsroman. About a young Provencal man who has come to Paris and ends up living in pretty abject poverty with one or possibly 2 prostitutes (it was banned on publication).

He half loves one of the women, but believing she has betrayed him, falls in love with the other even younger one who is dying towards the end.

Maybe shocking at the time, but didn’t do a lot for me.
