821. Charles Dickens - Oliver Twist

Thought I would try another Dickens after 819 and not really enjoying the 21st century 820.

Quite enjoyed this, but Dickens' characters do swing between the good (idealised) the bad (grotesqued), although Nancy is superficially bad but sentimentalised as good. Interesting that Fagin is characterised very negatively as the Jew in this book, by the time of Our Mutual Friend he had obviously changed his mind, and presents a superficially unattractive Jewish character in a very attractive light.

Don’t know how much more Dickens I will read, there is little subtlety of character and the books are pretty plot and episodically driven.
