819. Charles Dickens - Our Mutual Friend

Not being a big Dickens fan, I thought I would try one yet again and took this on holiday. Deliberately chose a book I knew nothing about. Although extremely long (700 pages) and quite hard work, I did in the end enjoy it.

An absolute multitude of characters, some quite peripheral to the plot, but most played their part. The main plot was 2 love stories, one between a lawyer and a girl many rungs below his social station, who rejects him for exactly this reason. But perseverance (+ being beaten up by a rival) pays off. The other, which occupies much of the plot and I didn’t fully understand is bizarre – a body is found dead in the Thames, presumed to be [can’t remember the name], this person I think is betrothed to Belinda, whose father’s will requires her and his (the father’s) fortune to be cared for by a Mr Boffin, who proves to be a pretty Jeckyl & Hyde character. The drownee is not of course drowned and love conquers all in the end. Obscure in part and difficult though it was, I did enjoy it and will maybe try some others.
