The 4th (?) in the Easy Rawlins series; I have no memory of reading this before. These books are OK, a black working class central figure, lots of echoes of Chandler in the style and tone. For me, as happens a lot in these genre, there are too many characters and I loose track. The plot is basically a female in trouble who throws herself and her dog at Rawlins seeking protection from a drug related bit of criminality that her husband has got her caught up in. I can’t really remember how it progresses – one annoying feature is that Rawlins has a mate nicknamed Mouse who is as seriously hardened criminal and appears as a kind of deus-ex-machina to dig Rawlins out of various holes, although I think he is killed towards the end of the book.
