792. Leonardo Padura -Havana Black

The last of the quartet. Young rock & roll Cuba vs its past. You do learn implicitly about Cuban history; the wealthy upper/middle class fled Cuba mainly for Miami when the revolution came taking their valuables, including much priceless art which ended up in Cuba when it was a staging post centuries ago between Europe and south America or further overseas. And corruption amongst the Cuban bureaucracy in the 1970’s/80’s.

This one involves the murder of a corrupt bureaucrat who had returned to Cuba from Miami to salvage a gold statue of Buddha which he had buried in his parent’s garden. Condi of course solves the murder by his wife’s ex lover. Background is a hurricane approaching Cuba, and Conde’s resignation from the police hoping to become a writer of squalid.
