This is quite complex. Chandler seems to write about a very decadent West Coast American in, is it the 1930’s or 40’s. Sexual fidelity within this milieu is hardly a given so we have multiple layers of corruption, but the basis is mainly monetary. The lady is the lake in this book could be one of multiple ladies and Marlow unravels the plot in a slightly Sherlock Holmes way at the end with the killer in his audience. Although armed and assuming himself to be untouchable, he is shot by a retired policeman whom he has underestimated. Hard work and not entirely a satisfying read.
