784. Ruth Rendell - Going Wrong

Another thriller for the Tesco queue; I have got quite good at finishing a serious book on a Friday night. But this is the last Ruth Rendell in the bookcase! Another novel about a psychopath.

Guy, a working class lad, has fallen in love with middle class Leonora at school and remains obsessed with her. Through various shady dealings , and, incongruously, producing some tatty art which earns good money he is now a wealthy man and convinced that Theodora still loves him, as she did as a teenager. They have lunch every Saturday, despite both having other partners; his he claims is trivial, her’s she admits more serious. But guy cannot accept that her feelings have changed and blames almost every member of her family for poisoning her feelings towards him.

Eventually she brings forward the marriage by a week to deceive him and his evil deeds catch up with him. I think these books have dated, and now seem quite slight and trivial. But OK for a Tesco queue and easy to finish in the garden in this glorious and locked down weather.
