Felt like trying one of these again. The central figure (the Count, Conde, he seems to go by various names) despite being a policeman in Havana, steps straight out of Bruce Springsteen as the Born to Run protagonist, although maybe more sanguine about life’s failures.
Quite difficult to read; the narrative jumps around in time quite a lot. The police/whodunit element of the plot in this one is pretty irrelevant and the story is really about Conde’s love, sex and infatuation with a beautiful woman who tells him toward the end that she can’t see him any more because her husband is returning from work overseas. (The first Conde knows about the husband!) There are a lot of anguished romantic failures in these books.
