This was on the radio and bits of it were set quite locally in Binfield, so I thought I would give it a go.
Bits I liked, for instance the juxtaposition between the present (1939) and his childhood, just pre World War 1 in which George Bowling (the central character) fought. He also reminded me a bit of my father and the social mobility that war and manpower requirements gave to working class young men whose lives would otherwise have followed a fairly predetermined path. But Orwell is quite a boring unimaginative writer and I don’t feel inclined to rush to read more.
