Interesting to read this just after Le Carre, as this treads the same territory 30(?) years later and features ancient, superannuated agents of the era he was writing about.
The Drop is literally a drop in a case made by a young woman to pass information to her handler witnessed by a very elderly German ex MI5 agent who insists on reporting it to his handler. Met with some scepticism, he is proved to be correct; his handler, a pretty superannuated operative himself, asks a colleague to look into this and the German handler finds out somehow, goes to scope out the elderly German, and inadvertently causes his death by hiding in his wardrobe.
Sounds a bit silly summarised like this, but actually very good.
