739. Siobhan Dowd - A Swift Pure Cry

Bought another one, as I finished 738 before being ready to sleep. This one is actually even better – about a 15 year old girl in Cork who gets pregnant accidentally (I don’t think she even understands the concept at the time). With a dead mother, an alcoholic father who claims to preach the word but spends what he receives on alcohol, and 2 younger siblings to care for, she has to learn fast. A friendly and liberal priest is driven out of the community on the mistaken assumption that he is the father.

The plot is frenetic, but brilliantly structured as is the characterisation. Sadly, she died recently and all royalties from the books go to a charity she set up on her death to facilitate reading where opportunities/funding are limited. A really good and little known writer on the strength of these 2.
