731. Patrick Modiano - The Black Notebook

Heard about this guy on Radio 4’s ‘A Good Read’. Apparently quite a well known writer, has written loads, Nobel Prize listed, but I, like most of the guests, had never heard of him.

The book was very short (thankfully), very French and reminded me of, if anyone, Camus, with maybe a bit of Proust thrown in.

A man wanders round Paris, drifting at least in his mind between time zones, and recalling an ex girlfriend and some rather shady Algerians she and he were involved with in some rather obscure way.

Readable but obscure to me – I won’t be rushing out to buy a lot more.
