719. Tracey Chevalier - A Single Thread

One of Paddy’s and this was brilliant.

Set in the early 1930’s and about a 38 year old spinster whose intended had been killed the 1st World War. Oppressed by her miserable mother in Southampton, she escapes to Winchester and discovers inter alia the cathedral, brodering (embroidering prayer mats), bell ringing, and eventually love, fulfilled by a baby after her single fuck with the father, but no ongoing relationship as he is married with a vulnerable wife, and both understand that they cannot live together.

The book ends with him ringing a single bell in the cathedral as his daughter is baptised there. A brilliant book; I should try some more.
