714. William Faulkner - Light In August

Always try to read one big chunky classic novel on holiday and chose this, for some reason this year.

A big and difficult novel, about the American deep South in the early 20th century. A big number of ‘central’ characters, the blurb says the central character is Joe Christmas, a white looking negro who murders his white lover, possibly in self defence, and allows himself to be caught and executed by the white community he occupies. But there are a group of equally central characters, and it really is a challenging and chunky read, and deserves to be re-read and would make a good film if this hasn’t already been done.

Very good – I should read more Faulkner, although they are challenging.
