I enjoyed this, although it was long and hard work!
Annoyingly, it succumbed to various clichés attaching to this type of novel; about 3 public schoolboys from the same (I think fictional) public school roaming around Spain in the 1930’s – one a communist who had fought in the civil war and is imprisoned by the Franco/Falangist regime for much of this book, one an opportunist rebel working for wherever the money is and the 3rd, I supposes the central figure, recruited by MI5 (?) to pose as a translator in the British embassy and spy on no.2.
I also found it annoying that the plot jumped between the 3 characters in slightly different time zones. But once you get over these (minor) annoyances it is, as they used to say, a rattling good yarn. May be not much else.
