702. Isabel Hardman - Why We Get The Wrong Politicians

Much less enjoyable, despite being some newspaper’s ‘Book of the Year’.

A mix of tittle tattle journalism and an underlying thesis, presented far too late in the book, about what politicians should be trying to achieve, and the impediments to their success. But the first ¾ was simply fairly cheap journalism about the costs of getting elected, other barriers, pressure from the whips, success meaning literally toeing the party line etc. All of which I am sure have a corrupting and limiting influence. I just think she should have begun with the role (making and scrutinising legislation) and then the barriers to achieving this. So it was literally arse about face.
