698. Ed McBain - Kings Ransom

Insomniac night after finishing 697, grabbed another short book from the (crime) bookshelf. Despite, I think, what people would say, McBain is a much better writer than Barnes. This could have been staged as Checkhov (not sure) or Ibsen variant.

Tight, claustrophobic atmosphere and dialogue between a small number of major characters, victims, perpetrators and the usual 87th precinct police.

Very sharp, tautly written dialogue and wonderful irony at the end as the venal King transformed himself into an avenger of wrongdoing. Very short, early (1965) but high quality read.
