69. John Buchan - The Thirty-Nine Steps


Inspired by the chase around Scotland in no.68 ( and struggling a bit with no.70) I Kindled this for nothing. Never read it or any other Buchan as far as I can remember.

Another fast paced plot; no sex (indeed hardly a female at all). The hero is a jaded ex colonial back in the UK, who falls rather accidentally into this tale of derring-do (is that the expression? spell check is OK with it).

You could read the early escape to Scotland with a map of the Dumfries area, which I quite enjoy.

The 39 steps lead down to the sea (more German spies trying to escape with military secrets); in the film I am sure they led down to a Scottish glen, but it is ages since I have seen it.
