688. Olivia Kiernan - Too Close To Breath

I wanted a modern crime thriller after all this 19th century stuff and picked this (or rather her next book – I will always go back to the first with a new author) from a Spectator ‘Best 2019 crime’ feature on Google.

Maybe her next book is really good, but I struggled with this one. None of the characters interested me much and the sadistic murderer, after loads of red herrings and false leads was a diabolo ex machina who had hardly appeared in the book before, so no subtlety at all there.

If you can’t structure your plots better than this, I wouldn’t bother with crime fiction, but I have had a long day and that is a bit caustic.
