665. Simon Mawer - The Girl Who Fell From The Sky

I loved this – book of the year so far.

It began with her parachute drop into France in 1942 or 3, and then bounced back into her background and training as an SOE agent – this was very similar to and appeared possibly derivative of Charlotte Grey. But what was interesting was the way the heroine changed and developed in France; as the book developed she shed her English middle class femininity and became a really hard nosed agent.

The scenes in Paris during which she shot in completely cold blood a couple of Gestapo agents, and then right at the end when she did not board the aeroplane with her lover to return to England and (one thought) enjoy married life as a civilian, were brilliant and shocking.

So I will be straight into the successor book called I think Trapeze.
