638. Andrew Michael Hurley - The Loney

This is a strange book; Radio 4’s book of the month for November which is where I came across it.

The Loney is a bit of actual (or imagined) coast near Blackpool, where the cockle fishermen drowned a few years ago. The plot involves a pilgrimage by a north London Irish (I think) Catholic family who have a disabled son who (they think) may be cured by a religious experience there. What they encounter is the apparent opposite of a religious experience which nonetheless cures him and has the opposite effect on his brother, the narrator.

Very strange, but very different so definitely worth a re-read, probably on a Mediterranean beach next summer – would need a long pause and a clear mind to read again.
