619. Reginald Hill - Under World

Enjoyed no’s 597 and 615, so thought I would give Hill another go.

This is the one where Ellie Pascoe comes close to having a Lady Chatterley style affair with a miner. I used to read a lot of Reginald Hill, but went off him when his plots became too cryptic and crossword-like for me. Death’s Jest Book and the recurring character of Franny Roote is the one that springs to mind – perhaps I should give this another go.

This one is very good – the scenes down the mine reminded me of Germinal, but perhaps coal mining is (?was) the same wherever located.

This is a good multi-plot layered detective story.
