605. John Williams - Stoner

Quite a ‘quiet’ book, about the fictional life of an academic who abandons agricultural training (parents being farmers) for literature and becomes a teachers at a small US university. He marries (unhappily), and has a daughter, has a happier affair with a colleague and academic rows with other colleagues. Daughter has an unplanned pregnancy and he approaches retirement before which he dies from cancer.

Well written, but hardly distinguished or very interesting.
