6. Janice Y.K. Lee - The Piano Teacher

I thought this was a wonderful book, not unlike Greene, but written by a woman.

Set in wartime and post-war Hong Kong, it is about (mainly) English colonials, the very vicious Japanese invaders, and deep corruption and double-dealing by the Brits and local Chinese.

The piano teacher herself is probably one of the weaker characters; her boyfriend Will and his affair with Trudy Liang, and what she has/chooses to put up with are central.

Very good read.
