594. Henry James - The Wings Of A Dove


Maybe optimistic to pick a difficult late James after enjoying 593, but you can see the logic I hope.

And I read the Ambassadors (recently?) without too much difficulty, but this really was hard going. The prose can go on for 10 tortuous kindle pages with no events at all. Once you hit a bit of dialogue things get a lot better. And I am not that convinced it is a very good book.

Millie, who according to James’ postscript, is supposed to be the central character, has quite a minor role compared to Kate Croy and Merton Densher, who are a little like Macbeth and lady Macbeth to her Duncan.
