59. Michael Ondaatje - The English Patient

Not sure if I have read this before. It is very good, quite difficult but at the same time oddly easy to read (and quiet short).

It is very different from the film - seems to be about the interactions of four very different people at the end of World War 2.

Almasy, the English (or is he?) patient, Caravaggio the Canadian thief who seems to have been involved with British intelligence and wants to find out what exactly Almasy did, Hana the Canadian nurse, and Singh the Indian sapper who becomes her lover.

It ends pretty well with the Americans dropping the atomic bomb on Japan; the ultimate savagery of the west towards the east in Singh's view.

Strange, haunting, and difficult.
