588. R. J. Ellory - A Quiet Belief In Angels

Have read this before and am not entirely sure what to make of it.

A bildungsroman (is that what they are called?), about a boy brought up pre and during the war (WW2) in rural Georgia (USA), who experiences the murder of a succession of young girls around where he lives. He and his friends form a teenage vigilante group to try to catch the killer, without success.

There are various suspects including a German family who have emigrated. His girlfriend dies and the next one is murdered brutally by the killer (who is obviously on his trail). Eventually transpire that the killer is the local sheriff, whose motives are never made that clear to me.

Very lyrically and romantically written (as in the title) and a complete contrast to Mick Herron (587 above) but Herron is the better writer.
