This was clever and perhaps one of the first (? I have no idea) books to debunk conventional historical knowledge; no that is not right but perhaps the first (and only one?) to do so through the convention of a crime novel.
We have Grant, the policeman from 584 recuperating from an accident in hospital, bored almost to death, and one of his friends gives him some pictures to look at. With a policeman’s eye, he decides that Richard III does not look like a villain so he investigates the alleged murder of the princes in the tower. He concludes that the whole thing is a Tudor conspiracy, initiated by Henry VII to discredit the last (Yorkist? or Lancastrian) king and legitimise his own claim to the throne.
The history was a bit challenging at times, but this was otherwise very clever. Although I am still not entirely sure who the daughter of time is. Probably worth a re-read on the next holiday?
