582. Kate Atkinson - Emotionally Weird

I have tried, I think, to read this before. It is quite a weird book, a slightly surreal campus novel set in Aberdeen or possibly Dundee in the 1970’s.

Atkinson is a funny writers and lots of good jokes, as you would expect in the genre. Quite challenging to read; the main narrative is frequently interrupted with dialogue between the heroine and her even more bonkers mother and then by bits from a conventional but pretty surreal detective novel the heroine is writing.

All in all pretty weird but you could see it as Atkinson cutting her teeth on themes and novelistic techniques that she uses in later books.
